Beth Gray has been friends with many of us at Composable for a couple of years now, often meeting up at a local tech event or grabbing a few drinks. Now that Beth is officially part of the Composable family, it’s time for her to step into the Employee Spotlight.
What did you want to be when you were five years old? When I was five years old I wanted to be a zookeeper. I used to have an absolute blast helping my grandparents on their farm. I used to help care for chickens, lambs, and calves. I even assisted in some animal births when I was as young as 6.
When did you decide you wanted to be a developer instead of a zookeeper? It was a gradual shift that started in high school back in 2003/2004 when I took a Cisco sponsored web design course and helped maintain our school website. However, the deciding moments were meeting my boyfriend, a developer, and getting into Code Louisville.
If you weren’t a developer, what would you be doing? I’d still be in tech, but I would probably still be in internal tech support at the American Printing House for the Blind. It was a rewarding job, but I am excited for all the career growth and learning opportunities ahead of me now.
What’s your favorite food? I am torn between sushi and steak on this one.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done? Definitely my first Japan trip to study at Kansai Gaidai. I was so terrified. I only knew a handful of Japanese words and phrases going over. I picked Japan, because I figured I would go big or go home. I wanted to go for the most different culture that I loved so I could push myself to my limits. It made a huge difference in my future.
What would you name the autobiography of your life? Why? Independence from Fear because for the longest time I let my anxiety hold me back and keep me feeling hopeless. However, after my trip to Japan I started to really grow and get excited about new things.
When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time? Solitaire or a chapter from one of the books I am currently reading.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? This is difficult because I have read so many awesome books over the years. I would either be a wizard in the Harry Potter series, or a dragon rider in one of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern novels.
What phobias do you have? Needles. Thankfully I am nowhere near as bad as I used to be. I can easily get medical shots, but you won’t be seeing me in a tattoo parlor anytime soon.
When are you at your happiest? When I am sitting at home, comfy in front of my desktop playing video games like The Witcher or an Elder Scrolls game without a care in the world.
